How does your regular day at work looks like? What do you spend most of your time doing, and what are your biggest challenges?

My day looks very active as I have to share the time in between of client work and my duties as ECTA President. I have to travel a lot for many ECTA meetings.

Are there any happy moments in your work?

Each time when I succeed in my daily work make me feel happy. I still have not lost these feeling to enjoy each even smallest success in my daily work. The moments when you see how your well compiled arguments convinced someone to change his/her mind are happy moments of my work. That make me to be most satisfied about my decision to practice in this field. Meantime my engagements at ECTA grant me a unique opportunity to meet and speak with most important and knowledgeable people of the world in IP field. Thanks to the full support of my company I can enjoy this opportunity fully, although its demand from me a lot of time and efforts.

Can you think of a funny or memorable story?

There are too many funny and memorable stories in my live linked with my career as I happen to start working in this field very soon after Latvia become independent from Soviet Union, during the time when all Latvian IP system was built and starts working. Also time when Latvia join European Union was full of changes and new challenges. Living and practicing in the time when systems are changing is always very exciting and complicating. I demand for you many effort to learn and be ready to change your used habits. Sometimes you faced situation where highly educated and professional people are involved and besides you have explain importance of IP rights to person who maybe first time face these problems. Therefore I found that the most funny stories mostly are linked with anti-counterfeiting cases. However the most memorable situations, of course are the ones linked with my duties as ECTA President.

Would you make any drastic changes to your profession, and if so, what would it be?

No, I find this profession very interesting, dynamic and challenging, it also grant a very nice opportunities to travel and meet new people ,therefor I would love to keep it as long as possible. But as always in the dynamic world – you never know what the future will bring for you. Thus I never say never and always try to keep my mind open for new opportunities.

Congratulating METIDA on its 25th anniversary, R. Olmane wishes the firm continue developing, expanding and fulfill all dreams.
